Simple Kitchen Tips

Simple Kitchen TipsWe spend a lot of time in the kitchen and cooking, washing the dishes and other kitchen chores. Three times a day we prepare meals and have to deal with all the cleaning that comes with them. Oftentimes, we are faced with spoiled food. Some kitchen tips, which will save us some money, save us time and make the kitchen a safer place, come in handy. Here are some which anyone can adapt.

Preserving Food

It’s always good to know of ways to prolong the life of and preserving food, cooked or raw. It will save you money and trips to the grocery or market because you can buy in bulk.

1. You can save yourself trips to the bakery if you buy bread for several days. Keep it fresh by storing in the freezer. It won’t harden. Take it out of the freezer and allow it to reach room temperature before consuming. You’ll find out that it’s just as fresh as when you bought it.

2. Flour can also be kept in the freezer to prevent weevils from growing in it. It won’t harden or become lumpy in the freezer.

3. When storing vegetables in the refrigerator, keep them fresh by wrapping them in towels. The towel will absorb the moisture which makes vegetables rot easily.

4. Keep onions in the refrigerator to avoid shedding tears when slicing them.

5. You don’t have to throw away left-over tomato-based pasta sauce. Keep them in the freezer and they won’t get spoiled. You can just heat it in the microwave when you want to serve it.

Cleaning all those kitchen utensils, gadgets and tools can be tedious; techniques that can hasten it provide relief.

1. Baking soda is a great aid in cleaning those greasy pots and pans. Add some to your liquid soap and see those grease dissolve.

2. When preparing a large amount of vegetables, spread old newspaper on your work table. Once you’re done, you can just simply roll up the newspaper and save yourself some cleaning.

3. Fine sandpaper is a great way to remove stubborn stains from stainless steel pots and pans.

The kitchen is a place where accidents seem to always wait to happen. Keep it safer with these safety tips for cooking.

1. When frying food that will make the oil splatter, turn off the heat first before putting in the food. Turn it on again once you have placed the food in. I’ve had burns on my hands and face due to oil that splattered all over.

2. Overheated fat or oil is dangerous. Never heat oil in the pan for too long or leave and do something else if you don’t want a flaming pan. Fires have started from burning pans.

3. If you got yourself a burning pan, the first thing to do is to turn off the heat. Never throw water into the pan. Cover the pan with its cover or a wet rag or towel.

4. Do not use a round-bottomed pan for frying because it is prone to tipping.

Maintaining your large kitchen appliances will not only mean a longer life for the appliance but can also prove to be a great way to save you money when it comes to paying the power bill. Here are five useful tips to cut through the time spent on these chores.

Inside and out is equally important when it comes to cleaning fridges. Unless your fridge is a sealed unit there will be coils at the back that attract grime and dust. Make sure you have castors on the base so you can easily roll the fridge out and wipe over the back as easily as the front on a regular basis. Replace any filters before the due date in case you forget when the time comes.

Not all freezers defrost automatically especially the older types. Regular defrosting eliminates that crusty build up that takes forever to thaw out. Let the insides of the unit melt completely, take out the shelves and then wipe all surfaces with a solution of vinegar and water.

Defrosting also gives you a chance to get rid of old food that should not be reheated or cooked. While freezers do keep the food for a relatively long time there are limits. Follow the guide that comes with your freezer for safe handling of frozen foods.

Dishwashers and your dishes will benefit greatly from being cleaned from the inside. Check the filter regularly and scrub out. While it may seem like a waste of water and electricity, running an empty cycle from time to time will clear the inner workings and hoses which will give a better result to your wash cycles.

Ovens and cooktops
Instant wipe overs are quicker and easier than trying to remove baked on grime. This is true for stove tops and ovens. Make it a habit as part of your dishwashing routine. Remove racks and shelves and scrub with a brush. For electric ovens check the elements and wipe over. For gas make sure the jets are clear of food.

Wine Coolers
Keep it clean inside and out with a simple wipe over on a regular basis. Remove racks and scrub with a brush from time to time. Non abrasive cleaners can be used inside and out or a solution of vinegar in water. If you do have nasty stains or built up grime, bi-carbonate soda mixed to a paste with a little water is a much gentler way to remove the dirt than harsh chemicals.

By being diligent with the cleanliness of your large appliances you are saving yourself time from heavy scrubbing if you leave the dirt to spread and stick to surfaces. The appliances will have a longer life if you maintain them carefully and the overall running costs may be reduced greatly. Motors that have to work twice as hard to get through built on dirt will use more power.

The tips given here may be simple but they can make kitchen chores a little easier and buy you some time for yourself or other matters that need your attention.

Choose The Best Commercial Kitchen Equipment

There are certain things that you obviously have to be aware of when you are choosing commercial kitchen equipment for your business. There are some considerations that have to be put in mind when you are making a budget on which equipment you wish to buy. The following are some of the considerations that you have to have in mind before making a purchase:

The first thing that you have to consider is the amount of space that you have available for your equipment. Would you like one that fits under the counter and is there enough space for it to fit there? Or would you like a table top glass washer? All these are some of the factors that you have to consider when creating a budget for your glass washer. In addition, when you consider space, you have to also ask yourself whether you require a machine that has a capacity of 25 pint glasses, 16 pint glasses, etc. This will help you to know how much space you will require. The most obvious and important thing that you have to be aware of is the price of your kitchen equipment. When choosing your equipment, you have to look at the cost. Since you are running a business, you do not want to stretch your budget too far. This means that you should not go for the cheap machine that is of substandard quality and neither should you go for the most expensive one thinking that it is of high quality.

Another factor that you should not over look when buying your equipment is the small additional details. For example, are there any shipping costs included in the overall sale of the item? How much energy does it consume or will you buy a machine that will incur you great electricity costs? Such things should not be overlooked while buying a machine. You should purchase kitchen equipment that has a warranty. This is because the kitchen equipment, for instance, may fail to work soon after you buy it. Buying equipment that has a warranty gives you peace of mind. Ensure that the model you choose comes with a warranty that you fully understand. It shouldn’t have any sort of jargon that will not tell you exactly what you are getting.

Consider buying equipment that has water and energy saving features. It is already enough that your business is using too much water and electricity; you do not need another source to use up extra energy. If you buy commercial kitchen equipment that is water and energy saving, you might save up to 10% to 20% every month on energy and water bills.

Lastly, when choosing your equipment, look for the ones that have digital displays. These displays inform you exactly what you are getting. They will show you at a glance how much energy you are using, the basket size, etc.

Choosing your kitchen equipment can be quite a challenge but with the above few tips, you are guaranteed to make the right move on the item.

If you want to be really successful with your catering business then you have to pay a lot of attention to detail. Choosing the best Commercial Kitchen Equipment such as a commercial Glasswasher is very important as you do not want to buy equipment for your business that will let you down. The kitchen is likely to be at the heart of what you do for your customers and it is vital that everything runs smoothly so that the service that you offer is the best. Catering is a very competitive business and you need all the help that you can get to survive and prosper.

How to Cook Indian Food

You love Indian food but there’s a problem. You have no idea how to cook it. Maybe you don’t know how to cook, period. How in the world can you cook food as exotic and difficult as Indian food when you’re just a beginner? So, you resort to eating out but let’s face it; it’s hard on the wallet.

Here’s the good news. Indian cooking can be easy! It’s really not hard at all but you have to practice. Practice easy recipes first and you’ll start to find things get easier no matter what Indian dish you cook.

Here are some common things I hear all the time from beginning cooks:

1. I don’t know where to start.

Maybe you’re not Indian and have no idea where to start. Maybe you are Indian but your parents never taught you how to cook. It really doesn’t matter. The key here is to just practice. As you practice, you’ll not only gain confidence but you’ll start noticing a pattern to the cooking. Sure, each recipe is different but there are some common themes, tips, and techniques that apply repeatedly to different recipes which will help you move your way up the difficulty ladder.

2. Eyeballing Ingredients

Ever try learning how to cook from an experienced cook? Perhaps you tried learning from your Mom? They tend to eyeball everything and hate measuring. This makes even the simplest recipes frustrating for beginners because they have no idea where to start.

Eyeballing is something experienced cooks do all the time. Measurement is time consuming and most cooks already have an intuitive feel for how much of a certain ingredient to use, but how does a beginner develop this intuition?

As a beginner, you absolutely need the measurements. They’ll give you a reference point to start with. Use them to guide you but don’t overly obsess about them either. Once you’re comfortable with the dish, start trusting your instincts. The key here is to view cooking as more of an art than an exact science. Feel free to express yourself! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. That’s how you’ll develop this intuition. Just keep practicing!

3. What’s that spice called?

It’s no secret that certain spices are essential to Indian cooking. One of the biggest problems I had personally with learning how to cook Indian food was learning the names of the spices. Sure, I had them down cold in Hindi thanks to my mom but she had no idea what they were called in English. This mini-guide will make it easier for those you finding yourselves lost in translation.

Hindi Name: English Name
Haldi: Turmeric Powder
Dhania:Coriander Powder
Lal Mirch: Red Chili Powder
Jeera/Zeera: Cumin Seeds
Aamchoor: Sour Dried Mango Powder
Ajwain: Carom Seeds
Elaichi: Cardamom
Imli: Tamarind
Hari Mirch: Green Chili

I hope you found that helpful. Remember, the key really is practice. It’s okay if things don’t work out perfectly the first time. Get the ball rolling with easy recipes and move up the ladder to the more advanced dishes. You’ll get the hang of it as long as you keep cooking.

Picnic Food Ideas

Planning for a picnic can be a daunting task, especially if you are preparing for a lot of people, or maybe hosting people you do not know very well. In any case, it is important to prepare food that is pleasing to as many of your guests as possible, so that everyone enjoys your picnic – and good food is what makes a good picnic possible. Chicken is a fantastic choice for just about any picnic because it can be prepared in a variety of ways. The two picnic food ideas for chicken below will use this perfect poultry solution in two different yet equally delicious ways.

Picnic Food Ideas: Fried Chicken Tenders

Ah, chicken tenders. These are tasty, simple to make, easy to eat, and palatable to just about anyone. Plus, you can eat them with a wide variety of dipping sauces to please any guest you host at your picnic. To make these chicken tenders, you will need the following ingredients:

1 1/4 cup of flour
2 cups of Italian bread crumbs
2 beaten eggs
2 quarts of peanut oil (can use canola instead)
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
Black pepper
Two dozen chicken tenderloins
2 tablespoons of water

To make, take a bowl or baking dish and put the flour in it. In another dish, place the breadcrumbs and mix them with both types of pepper and a dash of salt. In another small bowl, mix the eggs and water together. Then, take each tenderloin and dip it in the flour, then the eggs, and then the bread crumbs. After each has been dipped, take your peanut oil (it tastes the best, in my opinion) and heat it in a fryer to about 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Fry your chicken about 4 at a time until the crush is golden brown in color. Drain on a paper towel. For dipping sauces, you can use anything you wish. I prefer honey mustard and BBQ sauce, but ranch, ketchup, Dijon mustard, and other sauces are also used. For best results, bring several and let your guests sample them all!

Picnic Food Ideas: Sesame Chicken

With this recipe, we move away from the traditional chicken tender to the more exotic sesame chicken dish. For this recipe, you will need:

2 chicken breasts (whole and boneless)
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 1/4 tablespoon of cooking wine
1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil
2 tablespoons of white flour
2 tablespoons of water
2 1/4 tablespoons of corn starch
1 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable oil

Take all of these ingredients except for the chicken and mix them together. Cut your chicken into small chunks and let your chicken marinate in this solution for two hours. Then, gather these ingredients:

1/2 cup of water
1/8 cup of vinegar (white)a
1/4 cup of corn starch
3/4 cup of chicken broth
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
2 ┬╝ tablespoons of sesame oil
1 tablespoon of sesame seeds (toasted)
1 minced clove of garlic
1/2 tablespoon of cayenne pepper
Peanut oil for frying

Take your chicken pieces and deep-fry them in the peanut oil. While you are doing this, add the above ingredients together and bring to a boil. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer while stirring occasionally. When your chicken has turned a nice golden-brown color, remove and drain the pieces on a paper towel. Bring the sauce up to a boil for about 10 seconds, then add a handful of sesame seeds and pour over the chicken.

Online Health Food Store Supplies

Online Health Food Stores have become a one-stop shop for health drinks and all natural foods that you can’t find in typical supermarkets or even retail health food stores. While it’s difficult these days to determine what items are really healthy and “natural” by looking at labels, online health food stores often have far more in-depth information available to consumers. Many times, products like health drinks may have only one natural ingredient, but still be labeled, “natural”, which does not always mean they’re healthy. This can be confusing for health conscious shoppers who want the highest quality nutrition.

Online health food stores are often much more thorough in describing the true nature of their health drinks and other products. They go to great lengths assuring customers that things like preservatives, isolated vitamins, artificial dyes or sweeteners are not included in their all natural foods and health drinks. They investigate the manufacturing facilities and processes to be certain that products are processed at low temperatures to maintain the whole food structures and live enzymes inherent in truly natural ingredients. Unfortunately, some of the so-called health drinks and all natural foods at typical stores are devoid of nutrients because of the processing and pasteurization in the packaging processes.

There has never been a better time to discover a new way of shopping for healthy products. Here are a few examples of things you will find at an online health food store that may appear the same as typical store bought items on the surface, but are vastly different in the way they are processed:

* Vitamins – At the online health food store it is more likely these are whole food vitamins, not isolated vitamins, which will give you more effective absorption of nutrients directly into your cells.

* Natural low carb and high fiber foods – These are not fake-food substitutes, but real, all natural food formulas prepared with long-term results in mind.

* Health drinks and teas – Not enhanced bottled waters or candy colored sport drinks, but herbal beverages with whole food ingredients and live enzymes.

* Alkaline Foods and Drinks – Unlike overly processed foods and drinks that create an acid ash in the bloodstream, alkaline foods and drinks support a healthy pH balance, so you can avoid health problems such as bone weakness and arthritis.

* Nutrition for athletes and pregnant women – Concentrated with many pounds of natural ingredients to produce one pound of finished product, these online health food store products provide more power in fewer calories.

Many of the all natural foods and health drinks from an online health food store are likely to contain ingredients that have been grown on small farms or even in the wilderness, without the use of harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers that are robbing our foods of real nutrients. This is far different from mass-produced products made with so-called “natural” ingredients that have been manufactured on giant factory farms with artificial fertilizers and dangerous pesticides.

If you wouldn’t use it in your own garden, then you probably won’t find it in products grown for all natural foods and health drinks at an online health food store. You would be surprised to know how many non-organic foods, and even some labeled as “natural”, have been grown that way. The United States Department of Agriculture defines organic food as produced by a farmer practicing soil and water conservation. In addition, they must make use of renewable resources in order to protect the environment for future generations. These are the types of all natural foods and health drinks that you will find at a reliable online health food store.

Today, some people avoid healthy lifestyle choices because they think the cost is too high or that alternative choices will rob them of modern day conveniences. However, it is important to realize that modern technology can bring those conveniences to anyone with Internet access. If you can Google, you can find an “online health food store with all natural health drinks”. Don’t fall into the unfortunate trap of not making the switch because you believe that you can’t afford all natural foods and health drinks without making major sacrifices. It won’t matter if the weather is bad or if you don’t have time to get to the market. It’s easy to order health drinks and other items from an online health food store with more detailed information on what you are buying than you could ever get from a typical store.

As consumers, we know that it is time to restore ourselves with nature. The quick fix and shortcuts that have rooted us in our everyday lives no longer serve us well, if they ever really did. This is not a passing fad. It is a wake up call that you see more and more as online health food store owners are leading the way for a green generation to discover a better way of shopping for truly all natural foods and health drinks.
